Fort Worth, Texas -Fort Worth ISD’sscores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)—released Friday afternoon by the Texas Education Agency -- continue to trend in a positive direction.
According to projected TAKS results, FWISD schools will double the number of recognized schools this year. At the same time, the District’s number of academically unacceptable schools will be cut by a third, compared to the number of schools that received this designation last year.
Among elementary students, almost all accountability areas have either improved or remained stable. At the middle school level, there were substantial increases in the percent of students meeting the passing standard for reading, math, science and social studies at all grade levels. High school state accountability subgroups at each grade level are also projected to meet or exceed the standard with a few exceptions.
“The good news is that we have doubled the number of Recognized campuses and reduced the number of low-performing campuses by one third,” said Superintendent Melody Johnson. “Only 13 campuses in the entire district have less than 75% of their students proficient in Reading. In Mathematics, 47 elementary and 9 middle school campuses have achieved Recognized or higher performance. Science performance is up significantly for all student groups across the board.”
Campus Ratings
Each campus must attain the state’s minimum performance standard in every subject tested, and for every student group (All Students, African American, Hispanic, White, and Economically Disadvantaged), to be rated at least Acceptable.
There are thirty-four (34) projected Recognized and Exemplaryschools for 2007-2008, significantly more than the nineteen (19) high performing campuses last year. There are seventy-two (72) campuses that are rated Academically Acceptable and we saw a significant decrease in the number of Academically Unacceptable campuses (from 15 to 10).
According to Dr. Johnson, “Thirty-three elementary campuses and one middle school attained Recognized levels of achievement in science and one middle school. Only six campuses remain unacceptable due to science – a GREAT improvement over last year.”
“Additionally, all of our low-performing campuses are making significant progress in most areas, despite still being designated Unacceptable. We have miles to go, but we are certainly on our way,” she said.
