Poly Will Prevail; TAKS Scores Show Improvement in Many Categories

The hard-working teachers, staff and students of Poly High School have a lot to be proud about today: as data released by the Texas Education Agency show improvement in many categories and student populations.

Although the student populations missed reaching the passing rate as set by TEA, there is another story to be told about how much those student groups have increased their performance level. There is a very positive story when you look at how the student cohort groups performed as they moved from 9th to 10th grade and from 10th grade to 11th grade.

This is compelling evidence that Poly’s strategies are working.

For instance, last year’s 9th grade students scored 11 points higher in TAKS reading this year in the 10th grade. They came up 14 points in mathematics.

Students who were in the 10th grade last year scored 15 points higher in reading in 11th grade and 19 points higher in mathematics. The same group of 1oth graders also scored 19 points higher this year in 11th grade social studies and 31 points higher in science.

Superintendent Melody Johnson praises the hard work of the principal, teachers and students at Poly, saying “Polytechnic High School deserves to have all of the time allotted to them as they continue to make outstanding progress.

“We know there remains much work to be done, particularly in mathematics,” continues Dr. Johnson. “We are deeply concerned and have invested time in planning and committed significant resources to address student performance issues.”

Poly HS has undergone a transformation in the past two years, with new faculty and leadership. They also are benefiting from the District’s high school redesign plan as well as the implementation of a new District-wide curriculum. The school will be a PEAK school beginning this fall, with even more resources devoted to the support of classroom instruction.
